CAR INSURANCE QUOTES GUIDE

How to compare car insurance quotes side by side.

A useful car-insurance comparison is more than putting two monthly premiums next to each other. Quotes should be based on similar driver and vehicle information and, most importantly, equivalent coverage. Otherwise the cheaper number may simply represent less protection.

Start with accurate information

A personalized quote may ask for your location, drivers, vehicle information, driving history, mileage and current or desired coverage. Exact requirements vary by insurer. The more accurate the information, the more meaningful the final quote can be.

Match liability limits

Compare the same liability limits across insurers. A quote with lower limits can cost less while offering less financial protection after a covered loss. State minimums differ, so do not assume that every quote uses the same limits automatically.

Match deductibles

If collision or comprehensive coverage is included, use the same deductible for each quote. A $1,000 deductible and a $500 deductible do not create an equal price comparison because the out-of-pocket risk is different.

Check optional coverage and fees

Look for differences in rental reimbursement, roadside assistance, uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage, gap coverage and other optional protections. Also check installment fees, payment schedules and whether quoted discounts are already included.

Know whether a price is live, estimated or illustrative

A live quote from an insurer or appropriately licensed partner is different from an estimate or marketing example. AutoRateFinder currently labels its insurer comparison as illustrative because live carrier integrations are still pending. We do not want a demo price to be mistaken for a real personalized quote.

Before you switch

Verify the final premium, coverage, effective date and insurer information before cancelling an existing policy. Avoid a lapse in coverage. If you need individualized advice, contact a licensed insurance professional.
