CHEAP CAR INSURANCE GUIDE

How to look for cheaper car insurance without cutting the wrong coverage.

Cheap car insurance is not simply the policy with the smallest monthly number. A fair comparison starts by matching the same liability limits, deductibles and major protections across insurers. If one policy is cheaper because it offers less protection, it is not an equal comparison.

Compare equivalent coverage first

Use the same liability limits for every option you review. If you are comparing comprehensive and collision coverage, keep the deductibles the same as well. Add-ons such as roadside assistance, rental reimbursement and uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage can also change price and value.

Shop more than one insurer

Insurers use different rating models, so the same driver and vehicle can receive different prices from different companies. That is why comparison shopping matters. AutoRateFinder is designed to make those differences easier to review once live licensed-partner connections are enabled. The current site is an educational preview and does not display live carrier quotes yet.

Ask about discounts

Possible discounts can include multi-car, home-and-auto bundling, low mileage, telematics, good-student programs, defensive-driving courses, anti-theft equipment and paying a premium in full. Eligibility varies by carrier and state, so only the insurer or licensed partner can confirm a discount.

Use deductibles carefully

A higher comprehensive or collision deductible can reduce the premium, but it also raises the amount you may need to pay after a covered loss. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners advises consumers to make sure a higher deductible is affordable before using it to lower costs.

Review the policy before switching

Check the effective date, coverage limits, exclusions, payment fees and deductibles before cancelling an existing policy. Avoid creating a gap in coverage. If you need advice about your individual insurance needs, speak with an appropriately licensed insurance professional.
