2026 EV INSURANCE GUIDE

Why can an electric car insurance quote cost more?

An EV is still priced using ordinary auto-insurance rating factors, but the vehicle itself can change expected claim costs. The useful comparison is your actual EV quote against equivalent coverage — not a generic national average.

Why EV insurance pricing can differ

The NAIC notes several reasons electric vehicles may cost more to insure than internal-combustion vehicles.

Vehicle valueA higher vehicle value can increase the insurer's potential loss after a major claim.
Specialized repairsSome EV repairs require specialized equipment or technicians.
Battery repair or replacementHigh-voltage battery damage can affect repair economics.
Parts and repair-network availabilityParts availability and the number of qualified repair facilities can matter.

How to compare two EV insurance quotes

  • Use the same policy term.
  • Match liability limits before comparing the price.
  • Match collision and comprehensive deductibles.
  • Check whether rental, roadside, glass or other options differ.
  • Confirm that every discount shown in the quote is actually applied.

Do not compare an EV quote to an unrelated vehicle

The exact make, model, trim, repair characteristics and driver profile matter. A generic statement that “EV insurance is expensive” does not tell you whether your own quote is competitive or whether two offers provide the same coverage.
